The Programmable Phase Optics research is primarily engaged in applying the Generalized Phase Contrast (GPC) method, which facilitates lossless light transmission and direct conversion of input phase patterns to high contrast intensity distributions. This technique can be used in a number of applications requiring parallel light-beam encoding such as the generation of multiple beam optical traps, optical encryption/decryption or phase-visualization applications like wavefront sensing. The GPC core set-up can be miniaturized into a planar-integrated micro-optics setup in order to realize applications of the GPC method to current technologies in electro-optical data transport. In addition to phase encoding, the group is investigating parallel polarization encoding using spatial light modulators.
